Jack Travis: Towards an Afrocentric aesthetic

New York City based architect Jack Travis, FAIA, discusses his goal to create an aesthetic within American architecture that is derived from an Afrocentric base and a black cultural expression.

Travis considers his African American heritage as he designs.  He emphasizes this aesthetic exists “hidden in plain view,” and explains the significance of cultural specifics in design, and influences from the African continent.
